My Journey as a New Doula: Walking Beside Birth with Heart and Purpose
Starting out as a new doula, I often feel a mixture of deep excitement and quiet reverence. This work—supporting people through pregnancy and labor—is unlike anything I’ve ever done. It’s raw. It’s beautiful. It’s powerful. And even though I’m still early in my journey, I already know: I was meant for this. It’s the beginning of something bigger.
Why I Chose to Become a Doula
As a mother of three beautiful children—twin 9-year-olds and a 7-year-old—I’ve experienced firsthand how transformative and deeply personal the journey into parenthood can be. Each of my births was different, and each one taught me something new about my body, my strength, and the importance of support. Those experiences lit a fire in me. I knew I wanted to one day be there for other parents the way I wished someone could have been there for me.
When I discovered what a doula really is—someone who offers emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy and childbirth—I felt a deep calling. It wasn’t just about helping people give birth. It was about helping them feel seen. I signed up for training, began soaking up everything I could, and slowly started building my practice with heart, honesty, and the wisdom that motherhood has given me.
And the deeper I get into this work, the more I feel it aligning with my long-term goal: to one day become a midwife. For me, doulaship isn’t just a profession—it’s the foundation of that bigger dream.

Learning to Support, Not Fix
As a new doula, one of the biggest lessons I’m learning is that I don’t need to have all the answers. I’m not here to “fix” anything. I’m here to walk alongside people, to offer steady support, and to remind them of their strength—even when they feel unsure.
My role is to listen more than I speak, to hold space rather than rush in. Sometimes, it’s a gentle word. Other times, it’s just being present. What I’m beginning to understand is that birth is not something to manage—it’s something to be respected. And that same mindset will guide me as I one day step into midwifery.
What I Offer (And What I’m Still Learning)
I’m honest with my clients about where I’m at. I may not have years of experience yet, but what I do offer is a whole lot of heart, dedication, and a willingness to show up fully. I’m committed to learning, to growing, and to giving each family my full attention and care.
I offer prenatal visits where we talk through birth preferences, fears, and comfort techniques. I offer text check-ins, encouragement, and resources. During labor, I bring calm, comfort, and continuous support. After birth, I’m available to help debrief the experience, talk through emotions, and offer guidance through those early newborn moments.
My own experience as a mother helps me bring empathy and groundedness into every birth space I enter. I know what it’s like to be scared, excited, tired, and empowered—all at once.
Why Doula Support Matters
I can already see how powerful it is to have someone in your corner. Birth can be unpredictable, and having a calm, familiar face in the room makes a difference. I believe everyone deserves to feel heard and supported during birth—not rushed or judged.
I’m also passionate about helping partners feel involved and confident. Doulas don’t replace partners—we empower them to support, too. Everyone in the birth room deserves to feel strong and connected.
Where I’m Headed
Eventually, I hope to become a midwife. I truly believe there is no better way to begin that journey than through doulaship. Walking alongside families during labor has given me a deep respect for the strength and sacredness of birth, and has shown me the importance of compassionate, hands-on care. Being a doula is helping me build the emotional, spiritual, and practical foundation I’ll carry into midwifery one day.
Until then, I’m taking it one family at a time, one birth at a time—showing up with love, presence, and open hands.
